school visits...

Thank you so much for considering me for a visit to your school! My programs and rates are listed below. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I hope to speak with you soon!

CURRENT PRESENTATION AND WORKSHOP OFFERINGS

Reading and Q&A

Grade Level: Pre-K and up

You and your students will read Hidden City ahead of my visit, and vote on your three favorite poems. When I arrive to the class, I will talk about the title of the book, and how I came to write it. Then, I'll read the poems your class selected, and talk about each poem.  Questions are encouraged throughout the presentation, as well as at the end. I will read more poems as time allows. I will talk with you beforehand to find out if there are any specific things you want me to focus on during the reading.  For example: animals your class is studying, the research that goes into the poems, real-life places and stories that inspired the poems, writing techniques, and revision.

Duration: 30 minutes (give or take 5 minutes, depending on the age of the class and the number of classes to be visited)

Technology Requirements: No tech support is necessary for reading to a single class on a rug. For reading to a class seated at desks or tables, or for reading to combined classes, I will need a projector, the ability to use a USB drive, the ability to use PowerPoint, and someone to advance slides for me.

Write A List Poem: Writing from Research

Grade Level: Grade 3 and up

This workshop begins with a brief overview of Hidden City, as well as a close reading of selected poems to talk about word selection and lists in poems.  Each student will receive grade-level appropriate handouts for creating list poems. Students will write two list poems: one from memory about a specific topic, and one while observing a short video (played on loop) of the topic. We will talk about the difference between writing from memory and writing from research, and briefly touch on ways to use different resources when you write. If time allows, students will be invited to share their work, and we will touch very briefly on revision.

Duration: 45 mins - 1 hour  (This can be extended over the 1 hour time frame to include a revision workshop and/or be combined with Writing a List Poem: Writing from Research)

Technology Requirements: I will need a projector, the ability to use a USB drive, the ability to use PowerPoint, the ability to play a video (no sound needed), and someone to advance slides for me.

Write A List Poem: Writing from Nature

This workshop begins with a brief overview of Hidden City, as well as a close reading of selected poems to talk about word selection and lists in poems.  Each student will get a grade-level appropriate handout for creating a list poem. As a group, we will go outside to a garden, playground, or park attached to/near the school. Students will pick one thing from nature to write their list poem about. We will spend 15-20 minutes on writing, and then go inside. If time allows, students will share their work and we will touch briefly on revision.

Grade Level: Grade 1 and up

Duration: 45 mins - 1 hour (For 3rd grade and up, this workshop can be extended past the 1 hour to include a revision workshop and/or be combined with Writing a List Poem: Writing from Research)

Technology Requirements and Other Needs: This presentation  requires a projector, the ability to use a USB drive, and someone to advance slides for me.  If available, use of a large writing pad on an easel or a whiteboard for creating the sample poem, as well as clipboards for students to use while outside, are both helpful. If these items are unavailable, please let me know ahead of time so I can plan accordingly. For grades 1-2, this workshop works best with additional adult support. For a class of 20-25 students, I recommend a minimum of 3-4 adults (including me and the teacher). Additional adult support is especially useful for helping young writers pick a subject and get started.

Virtual Visits

Offer for teachers: If your class has read Hidden City and would like to ask me some questions, please contact me to set up a free 15 minute Q&A Skype chat!

45-minute Skype sessions are available. These sessions include a short reading of Hidden City, a "craft chat" where we discuss single element of the writing process (where writers get ideas, revision, using specific poetic devices, etc.), a Q&A session, and a writing prompt. 45-minute Skype sessions are $75.

My 2018-2019 school visit rates are:

  • $400 for a half day (up to 3.5 hours)

  • $800 for a full day (7.5 hours, including a half hour lunch break)

  • For schools not local to me there may be travel charges. These are determined on a case by case basis.

Please note that I charge based on time, not on the number of classes visited. When scheduling multiple classes, please include a 5 minute break in between classes so that we have time for logistics (i.e. getting to the class, setting up the presentation, and letting me drink some water!)

I give the following discounts:

  • 20% off to schools that are local to me (Greater Boston area, within 1 hour of my home)

  • 30% off to Title 1 schools

  • 50% off to Title 1 schools that are local to me

  • Variable discounts for schools that partner with other schools/locations to schedule visits on the same day or consecutive days

I want to support the needs of your individual classroom. Please contact me  for more information, or to ask me about creating a customized visit based on your curriculum.
